Material culture allows us to
experience the world in a tangible way. It is this part of our experience
which best resists the passage of time and which can be transmitted in the
most direct way. People come and go, ideas change, but objects and things
remain - at least a good portion of them. Eventually they form a critical
mass which human societies deal with and organize by assimilating,
neglecting, recycling or destroying, lest they be submerged by it.
