The rules of the game 1991: Henri Dorion, director of International Affairs at the Quebec Museum of Civilization, visits the MEN. During a lunch, he launches the idea of joining the forces of Neuchâtel and Quebec, and suggests inviting The Museum Dauphinois of Grenoble to join the duo. 1992: The three museums decide to collaborate. The first discussion took place in Quebec on September 19, as part of the XVI General Conference of the International Council of Museums (ICOM). |

The wall, the love, the kiss, the margin, the artificial, the fracture, the cold, the arms, the trail are some of the themes mentioned regarding the realization of One Exhibition, Three Ways. 1993: After many epistolary exchanges, the three directors: Roland Arpin, Jean Guibal and Jacques Hainard sign an agreement in Paris on February 24. The title "The Difference" is finally retained. 1995: In this time of cable networks, telephone conferences and multimedia, the present partners have paradoxically signed a clause on non-communication regarding the content of the exhibition, thus opting for air-tight, juxtaposed creations. Nothing leaked from Grenoble to Quebec, from Quebec to Neuchâtel, or from Neuchâtel to Grenoble. This museographic experience represents a world premier: three French-speaking museums join forces in putting up three facets of one ethnologic reflection finally entitled The Difference:Three Museums, Three Views, which will be presented at the MEN in 1995, at the Museum Dauphinois of Grenoble in 1996 and at the Quebec Museum of Civilization in 1997. The publication was also done in three different ways, with each museum elaborating its own piece of work based on the debate conducted about the chosen topic. The theoretic materials assembled during the preparation of the exhibition are thus found scattered in three volumes, each of them constituting a partial synthesis in its own way.
