Pom pom pom pom: une invitation à voir la musique

Current music constitutes the preferred method of analys of the functioning of societies which play it and are played by it, so much so that it is considered as a socio-cultural totality and not as an isolated phenomenon. Those who have conceived the exhibition Pom pom pom pom present in this perspective their reflections on the most striking fragments of music from the sound-track of our epoch and the activities to which they are related.

The exhibit then evokes the territory of meetings and social affirmations: community union through song, dance, celebration; social distinction by resorting to a particular musical style or by the rejection of another's taste; the expression of an ethnic or national origin by the use of emblems and standardization.

It equally tackles the importance of music in its relationship with the forces that shape comtemporary societies: concentration and the effects of crowds at an open-air concert as well as in a football stadium; mass production and mass consumption in the supermarket, at the airport and at the restaurant; alignment and conformity at the sites of ideological indoctrination; without forgetting self-defense mechanisms, the oppositions and contradictions that proceed from these power plays.

It touches finally on the new audio-visual methods of communication through an obsessive projection of «sound tag» taken from the Internet, demonstrating through derision and parody the power and coldness of numerical technologies.
